This article responds to an article on the Vietnam ethnology has had its day by Le Hai on the homepage BBCVietnamese.com dated 10 February 2007. The author presents opinions of some Vietnamese ethnologists, himself included, about nation, ethnicity and local groups, particularly the verification of ethnic backgrounds in Vietnam. Based on this, he emphasizes the importance of independence, creation and responsibility in the field of Vietnamese ethnology in dealing with the above-mentioned issues. This denies a statement of Le Hai and some scholars from the West when they state that the opinions of nation and ethnicity in Vietnam are influenced by that of J. V. Stalin and that the verification of ethnic backgrounds in Vietnam is subjective and imposed.
