The author discusses the process of surveying, researching and classifying the ethnic backgrounds of the communities living in the territory of People’s Republic of China from 1949 to 1990. According to him, the ethnic classification in China was implemented step-by-step through the five stages: 1949-1954, 1954-1964, 1965-1978 and 1978-1990. The general census in the whole country in 1990 defined 56 ethnic groups in China, including the Han as the majority people and 55 ethnic minorities. The ethnic classification contributes significantly to the work of socio-economic development and reinforcement of national solidarity, in addition to affirmating principles of equality, solidarity and mutual help of the policies relating to ethnic groups of the State of People’s Republic of China.
