Tóm tắt

There has been significant amount of research done on the changes that are happening in the ritual life of Vietnamese villages. This paper adds to the current existing research by specifically examining the 'intensification' of rituals in a particular craft village called La Phu in the Red River Delta. Located in the homeland of Ha Dong silk, La Phu is famous as a traditional weaving textile village. After Doi Moi, the development of weaving craft has made La Phu become one of the village considered to be 'prosperous' in the region. For La Phu villagers, however, economic growth does not mean that they are leaving behind old cultural norms or traditional culture. To the contrary, they are maintaining these norms and traditions; as indicated in the recent strong revival and 'intensification' of rituals in La Phu which can be explained by their adherence to the concept of ‘wealth giving birth to rituals’. What happened in this specific village has shown that there are positive impacts of this phenomenon on the community cohesion and marked development of the village craft. However, there are still unaccounted negative effects which need to be further researched
