The article describes customs and rituals relating to funeral rites of the Ma ethnic minority group: from the conception of life and death to the burial customs (preparations, coffin making and the ceremony to lay the corpse in the coffin, offerings to the deceased, and funeral and burial ceremonies). The author also deals with some changes in funeral rituals of this ethnic group at present. These include shortening the period of time that the corpse is allowed to lie in state in the house, giving up some taboos, and keeping valuable property instead of giving it to the deceased after the funeral.
