The Symbol of Water in the Cultural Life of Catholics in the Bui Chu Diocese

Abstract

In the course of researching religious culture, we have observed that, in addition to prominent symbols, water consistently holds an important position and role in the cultural life of Catholics. Beyond its physical functions, water also serves as a theological symbol, representing life, death, and rebirth into a new existence. Adopting approaches from cultural symbolism and Catholic symbolism, this study focuses on surveying several parishes in Bui Chu Diocese, formerly in Nam Dinh province (now part of Ninh Binh province), thereby analyzing and highlighting the significant role of water - related elements in the cultural life of the local Catholic community.
