Objectives: To describe the prevalence of peripheral phlebitis in patients with peripheral intravenous catheters at the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology Hanoi and identify factors associated with this condition.
Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 361 inpatients aged 18 years or older in the clinical departments of the hospital. Data were collected through structured interviews and observations, using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) scale. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0.
Results: The prevalence of peripheral phlebitis in patients with intravenous catheters was 4.7%, with grade 1 phlebitis accounting for 4.2% and grade 2 for 0.5%. Nurses with less than five years of experience had a higher risk of causing phlebitis compared to those with more than five years of experience (OR = 2.7, p = 0.049); poorly secured catheters significantly increased the risk of phlebitis (OR = 14.4, p < 0.001); fluid or blood leakage outside the dressing increased the risk of phlebitis (OR = 7.69, p < 0.001).
Conclusions: The prevalence of peripheral phlebitis at the hospital falls within the recommended range of the Infusion Nurses Society (INS). Factors such as healthcare staff experience, catheter fixation method, and hygiene at the catheter site significantly impact the risk of phlebitis.
