Case report: Missed torsion of ovarian teratoma - lesson from misdiagnosis
Abstract
Torsion of ovarian teratoma is a common and severe complication of ovarian teratoma [1]. Diagnostic imaging plays an important role in determining diagnosis and facilitate early treatment for the patients1. Emergency surgery is performed to remove the tumor to avoid the risk of toxicity due to tumor necrosis and tumor rupture causing seeding tumor tissue into the peritoneum [2]. However, a small number of ovarian teratoma torsion develop slowly with atypical clinical symptoms and radiology features, causing difficulties in diagnosis and treatment for the patients. We report a case of a torsion of ovarian teratoma that was misdiagnosed as a liposarcoma on computed tomography. The patient was admitted to the hospital with nonspecific clinical symptoms and was re-diagnosed by MRI, a laparoscopic surgery was conducted to completely remove the ovarian dermoid cyst. A multimodality and multidisciplinary diagnostic approach may help reduce diagnostic confusion.
