Abstract

Thermal deformation due to the hydration process of cement in concrete mixtures is one of the main causes of cracking in structures, especially in mass concrete structures in general and bridge piers and abutments in particular. In the early age, thermal cracks commonly occur. Therefore, determining the temperature field and stress distribution during bridge pier construction is crucial for implementing measures to control thermal cracking. This paper presents a mathematical equation for calculating the maximum temperature and the maximum temperature difference between the core and the surface of the bridge pier during construction, taking into account material properties and construction conditions in Vietnam. The research results will propose appropriate solutions to prevent thermal cracking during the construction of bridge piers.
