The August Revolution of 1945 and the lessons of seizing opportunity to avert threats - Its significance today
Abstract
One of the most remarkable and meaningful successes of the August Revolution in 1945 was the Party’s timely decision to seize the opportunity, avert potential threats, and achieve a swift victory with minimal losses. The opportunity arose when conditions for an uprising had fully matured: The anti-Japanese resistance movement robustly grew, the people were ready to revolt, and the Party along with the Viet Minh were proactive and determined to lead a nationwide uprising. Meanwhile, Japan had surrendered to the Allies, and Japanese troops in Indochina were in a state of extreme confusion. Resolute action was taken to counter threats: the return of French troops aiming to reimpose colonial rule as before March 9, 1945; and certain Allied groups exploiting the situation in Indochina to pursue invasion schemes. This lesson of success holds great meaning for various periods of Vietnam’s revolutionary.
