Study on serum ferritin levels in patients with Prediabetes

Objective: To investigate serum ferritin levels and the prevalence of elevated serum ferritin among patients with prediabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 84 patients aged ≥ 35 years diagnosed with prediabetes and receiving treatment at the Internal Medicine Department A, Hue Central Hospital –Facility 2, from June 2023 to August 2024. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. The study variables were collected through patient interviews and clinical examinations, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed to determine plasma glucose levels at two time points (G0, G2). Laboratory tests included HbA1c, serum ferritin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, and LDL-C. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0.Results: Among the 84 prediabetic patients, the mean serum ferritin concentration in males (372.2 ± 195.5 µg/L) was significantly higher than in females (293.5 ± 165.1 µg/L), with an overall mean of 333.8 ± 184.5 µg/L. Elevated ferritin levels were found in 67.9% of patients, whereas 32.1% had ferritin levels within the normal range. The prevalence of elevated ferritin was significantly higher among female patients compared with males. Elevated ferritin was also significantly more common among patients who were overweight or obese, had central obesity, low HDL-C, elevated triglycerides, and increased non-HDL-C compared with patients without these risk factors. Conclusion: Elevated serum ferritin levels were observed in a high proportion of patients with prediabetes. Increased ferritin was significantly associated with female sex and metabolic risk factors, including overweight/obesity, central obesity, and dyslipidemia. Serum ferritin may serve as a potential biomarker reflecting metabolic disturbances and early cardiovascular risk in patients with prediabetes.
