Epicardial adipose tissue thickness in type 2 Diabetes patients at Hospital 199

Background: Early cardiovascular risk assessment in diabetic patients still faces many challenges. Epicardial adipose tissue is considered a new marker of cardiovascular risk. There have been no studies on epicardial adipose tissue in diabetic patients in Vietnam. Objective: To investigate the characteristics and the risk factors associated with epicardial adipose tissue thickness in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 72 patients aged ≥40 years who diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, hospitalized at Hospital 199 from January to August 2025. The value of the epicardial adipose thickness is measured at the end of diastole on the longitudinal and transverse axis sectional views, measured on the free wall of the right ventricle, and then the average value is taken. Results: The average of the epicardial adipose thickness is 3.03 ± 1.62 mm, with a minimum value of 1.2 mm and a maximum value of 12.25 mm. There is no statistically significant difference between the measurements collected from the longitudinal cross-section and the horizontal cross section beside the sternum (p=0.437). There is a statistically significant relationship between age, gender, duration of diabetes treatment with the epicardial adipose thickness with p values of 0.003; 0.008; 0.039 respectively. Conclusion: the epicardial adipose thickness on cardiac ultrasound can be considered a simple, inexpensive, and accessible tool to assess cardiovascular risk in patients with diabetes.
