Abstract
Since assuming office in June 2022, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has actively promoted Philippines - Japan relations toward a more comprehensive and strategic direction, reflecting Manila’s policy adjustments amid the evolving regional order. This bilateral cooperation has expanded and deepened across political - diplomatic, economic, and defense - security domains. As both countries are key allies of the United States, the growing Philippines - Japan partnership not only serves their shared bilateral interests but also exerts significant influence on the regional security environment. While contributing to enhanced maritime governance capacity and the maintenance of a rulesbased order, Philippines - Japan relations also present new challenges associated with intensifying strategic competition and regional stability, particularly in the East Sea.
