ENHANCING ENGLISH VOCABULARY RETENTION FOR INFORMATION TECNOLOGY STUDENTS THROUGH MIND MAPPING AT TRA VINH UNIVERSITY

Vocabulary is crucial for foreign language learners, as a limited vocabulary hinders
language acquisition. This study aimed to examine the impact of the mind mapping strategy on learners’
vocabulary development and whether it promoted learner autonomy. A quasi-experimental design was
used, incorporating a vocabulary pre-test and post-test to measure vocabulary retention, and classroom
observations to assess learner autonomy. Results from the pre-test and post-test revealed that students in
the experimental group who used the mind mapping strategy retained vocabulary better, as reflected in
their higher post-test scores. Furthermore, observational data indicated that these students demonstrated
increased autonomy, becoming more active and creative in generating ideas and connecting words in
various contexts.
