Abstract
This study explores English teachers’ perceptions and practices of role-play in improving Grade
10 students’ speaking skills at Nguyen Huu Canh High School, An Giang Province. A qualitative case
study design was applied with three teachers, using semi-structured interviews, classroom observations,
and a supplementary survey. Findings showed that teachers valued role-play for reducing anxiety,
building confidence, and creating meaningful communication. However, implementation varied: Teacher
A applied structured scaffolding, Teacher B emphasized creative drama-based activities, while Teacher C
relied mainly on textbook dialogues. Common challenges included time limits, unequal participation, and
exam pressures. The study concludes that role-play is effective but requires scaffolding, differentiation,
and institutional support.
