Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the history of compiling encyclopedias in Japan over the past 1.000 years, followed by a discussion of the human resource networks and their gradual alignment with the evolving levels of technological development over time. It highlights that the genre of encyclopedias in Japan has been primarily compiled and published through grassroots networks, effectively mobilizing resources from the public (scholars, private publishers, and encyclopedia dissemination companies).
