Effectiveness of the solution to strengthen a masonry building with textile-reinforced mortar

Abstract

Masonry building is one of the commonly adopted structural types of low-rise civil buildings in developing countries. The building is often susceptible to damage when they are subjected to horizontal loads. Degree of damage to the building depends on the magnitude of the horizontal load. The solution to strengthen a masonry building with textile-reinforced mortar is a new solution, being researched and applied in the world, but in Vietnam there is very little research on this solution. This study investigates the degree of damage of un-reinforced and reinforced masonry buildings with textile-reinforced mortar subjected to the horizontal load using finite element analysis. The results show that for the buildings to be damaged at the same level, the magnitude of the horizontal load affecting the reinforced masonry building is larger than that of un-reinforced masonry building.
