Abstract
Over time, sustainable development has evolved from being a necessity to an imperative, requiring leaders to keep pace with trends and implement more concrete sustainable practices in their strategies and management processes of their businesses. This study aims to identify the criteria affecting the sustainable development of main contractors in Vietnam. Based on a review of previous research and the opinions of 10 experts with 11-25 years of experience in the construction field at main contracting and sustainable development units, the study identifies 29 influencing criteria. The concept of sustainable development stems from the desire to protect the environment, and the research results indicate a consensus on the impact of environmental aspects. The five criteria evaluated as having the highest influence are: Waste and construction wastewater management (MT03), Materials and resources (MT06), Environmental management (MT01), Emissions management (MT02), and Energy (MT04). The article also proposes solutions to enhance the sustainable business practices of main contractors in Vietnam.
