Studying filial piety using the dual filial piety scale - DFPS
Abstract
Filial piety is a concept that encompasses important ideas about how children should treat their parents emphasising care, love, and respect. A survey of 550 adults aged 29 to 59 years old used the Dual Filial Piety Scale (DFPS), developed by Yeh and Bedford, to adapt the Vietnamese version of the scale (DFPS-V). The results of the study confirmed the two-dimensional structure of the DFPS and showed the internal consistency of the two subscales: reciprocal filial piety and authoritarian filial piety. Reciprocal filial piety scored significantly higher than authoritarian filial piety. Older adults scored higher on authoritarian filial piety than younger students. Males also had higher scores on authoritarian filial piety than females. The Vietnamese version of the DFPS has been shown to be a valid and reliable measure of filial piety in future studies.
