Abstract

Vietnam and Japan have had diplomatic relations for centuries. In the modern era of economic and social changes, Vietnam officially established diplomatic relations with Japan in 1973. After 50 years of mutual efforts, Vietnam - Japan relations have achieved significant milestones. The economic, political, and cultural exchanges have expanded; the two countries have formed a macro-level relationship framework, and cooperation policies have been developed, implemented, and continuously evolved. Japan has expanded its investment trajectory in Vietnam, supporting Vietnam in developing transportation infrastructure, energy, healthcare, improving administrative systems, enhancing human resource quality, and job creation. Vietnam helps Japan realize its foreign policy, expand its investment market, and strengthen its position in Southeast Asia and Asia in general. Both countries contribute to the trends of peace, cooperation, connectivity, and development on the international stage. Vietnam-Japan relations in the past and present have always faced challenges. The economic, political, and cultural exchanges between the two countries cannot be separated from the trends of globalization and international integration. Understanding the past and current challenges is crucial for formulating optimal policies for each country to maintain and develop their relationship now and in the future.
