THE SYMBOLIC VALUE OF THE LOTUS IN VIETNAMESE MAHAYANA BUDDHIST ARCHITECTURE

Abstract: The lotus is a deeply symbolic image in Buddhism, representing purity, enlightenment, and transcendence over worldly defilements. In Buddhist architecture, the lotus motif is not only a decorative element but also conveys distinctive philosophical and expressive values. This study aims to clarify the role, significance, and forms of expression of the lotus in Vietnamese Buddhist architecture, thereby affirming the unique cultural and spiritual value of this art form. The research focuses on examining the lotus’s symbolism in prominent Buddhist architectural works such as the One Pillar Pagoda, Tay Phuong Pagoda, and But Thap Pagoda. It analyzes the lotus motif from the overall architectural composition down to decorative details. The results reveal that the lotus appears in various architectural elements with rich and diverse forms, while consistently retaining its symbolic meaning and high aesthetic value. This study highlights the lotus's important position in Vietnamese Buddhist architecture and suggests ways to creatively apply this symbol in modern design while preserving national cultural identity.
