Abstract
"Me tây" (A Vietnamese women who married Western from last XIX century to the early XX century) is one of the characters that appeared and caused a lot of attention and discussion in Vietnam in this period. However, up to now, within the range of materials we have, there has not been any work that summarizes and analyzes this research process in a systematic way. Therefore, this article focuses on clarifying the research question: What is a “me tây” in the last XIX century to the early XX century? What achievements and gaps have there been in the research journey on “me tây” in Vietnamese and world literature? What issues need to be further researched about this character? To find the answer, we use the method of synthesizing, analyzing, comparing, and comparing domestic and foreign documents related to this character. The results obtained show during this research period, “me tây” appeared but never became the central character. Therefore, issues related to explaining the appearance, personality, and movement in the life of “me tây” people under approaches such as discourse, cultural studies,... are some gaps which remain open and need to be further researched. The research results can be used in researching and teaching Vietnamese literature in general, and researching and teaching about women characters in Vietnamese literature in particular.
