Abstract

The General Education Curriculum 2018 marks a shift from a content-based teaching approach to a competency- and learner-qualities-oriented approach. In this context, experiential learning is regarded as an important pedagogical innovation that promotes students’ activeness, autonomy, and competency development. However, teaching practice in Natural Sciences at the lower secondary level indicates that teachers still face challenges in designing and organizing experiential learning activities that are aligned with lesson content and objectives. Based on an analysis of the content strand “Substances around us” in Grade 6 Natural Sciences and the application of David Kolb’s experiential learning theory (1984), this paper proposes a process for designing and organizing experiential learning activities oriented toward competency development. The proposed process is illustrated through a specific experiential activity in teaching the aforementioned content strand. The research findings provide both theoretical and practical foundations to support teachers in organizing experiential learning activities, thereby contributing to the improvement of the quality of Natural Sciences teaching at the lower secondary level.
