This paper presents an error-ellipse-based framework for evaluating the accuracy of radio-emitter localization using a direction-of-arrival (DOA)-based triangulation technique. Among current passive localization methods, DOA-based triangulation is widely used due to its simple hardware requirements, lack of time synchronization between stations, and flexible deployment. However, its localization accuracy strongly depends on the angle estimation errors at the directional receiving stations as well as the geometric configuration of the station network. The coordinate estimation error is analyzed using the covariance matrix and the error ellipse, which represents the localization uncertainty region. The error ellipse serves as an important mathematical tool for describing and evaluating accuracy; it also provides a basis for optimizing the system configuration. In this paper, the receiving-station configuration is examined to determine an improved layout that enhances localization accuracy. The theoretical results are verified using Monte Carlo simulations in Python. Furthermore, the research demonstrates potential applications in radio spectrum monitoring, warning, and management systems.Downloads
