Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions and behaviors of university students at Can Tho University in using artificial intelligence (AI) tools for academic research. In the Mekong Delta region, digital inequality and limited technological infrastructure pose challenges to AI adoption. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study surveyed 382 library users between October and November 2024. The findings identify seven key benefits of AI tools in academic contexts: supporting information retrieval and synthesis, accelerating data analysis, identifying research trends, assisting academic writing, enhancing idea generation, facilitating translation, and automating citation and referencing. The results reveal an increasing trend in students' use of AI tools for academic purposes, particularly in academic writing and research synthesis. This paper contributes to understanding how students interact with AI tools in academic environments and provides insights for developing support systems and ethical guidelines for AI use in academic research.
