Abstract

Red-emissive carbon nanodots (r-CNDs) are intensively demanded for many applications, such as biomedicine and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). r-CNDs can be synthesized by solvothermal methods to fuse organic precursors, such as phenylenediamine, in suitable solvents. The synthesis of r-CNDs using renewable resources could reduce the fabrication cost, enhance the environmental friendliness, and urge the deployment of CNDs in practical applications. In this study, we synthesized r-CNDs by solvothermal treatment of ethanol extracts of different tree leaves, including bougainvillea, mangifera indica L, khaya senegalensis, michelia alba, annona squamosa L, and citrus grandis L. The resultant r-CNDs were spherical with a diameter of 3-8 nm. Photoluminescent measurements showed that all leaves-derived CNDs exhibit a narrow red emission peak at 663-670 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of about 21-28 nm. The red emission properties of CNDs have been attributed to chlorophyll moieties retained in CNDs. Results demonstrated herein provide an universal and simple method for the synthesis of r-CNDs.
