This study presents a systematic review of heterogeneous catalytic ozonation and its potential for the removal of refractory organic pollutants from livestock wastewater. The reaction mechanisms occurring on catalyst surfaces are critically analyzed, with emphasis on the roles of oxygen vacancies, surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups, and the effect of pH on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In addition, the advantages, limitations, and technology readiness levels of three major catalyst categories (metal oxides, supported metal oxides, and hybrid carbon-based materials) are comprehensively evaluated. Reported experimental results demonstrate that catalytic ozonation significantly enhances COD and TOC removal, improves the BOD₅/COD ratio, and effectively degrades emerging contaminants such as antibiotics and humic substances. The process also exhibits strong disinfection capability, thereby reducing the risks associated with pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic resistance gene dissemination. However, practical applications in livestock wastewater treatment remain predominantly limited to laboratory and pilot-scale studies due to challenges related to cost, catalyst durability, and fluctuations in pollutant loading. Future research should therefore prioritize the development of low-cost catalysts, long-term stability assessment under real wastewater conditions, and pilot-scale studies to optimize process integration. Overall, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation is identified as a promising advanced treatment strategy for sustainable and safe livestock wastewater management.Downloads
