MOTIVATIONS AND BARRIERS AFFECTING LOCAL PARTICIPATION IN TOURISM DEVELOPMENT: A QUALITATIVE EXPLORATION IN ISLETS, VINH LONG PROVINCE

Engaging the local community is vital for the success of tourism development initiatives. This study investigates the factors that drive and hinder community involvement in tourism activities within Con Ba Tu and Con Chay Muoi, located in Thoi Thuan commune, Vinh Long province. Using a combination of fieldwork and in-depth interviews with residents engaged in tourism-related endeavors, the research uncovered key insights. The primary drivers for community participation include enhanced income opportunities, effective use of agricultural resources alongside scenic riverine and coastal environments, and showcasing unique local specialties to visitors. However, several barriers, such as limited support from local authorities, environmental degradation, uneven infrastructure development, restrictive policies, and insufficient community awareness, were identified as obstacles to deeper involvement. These findings offer valuable guidance for policymakers and practitioners seeking to promote meaningful local participation in sustainable tourism development.Downloads
