RESEARCH ON CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIBACTERIAL ABILITY OF ESSENTIAL OILS OF (Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit.) AND Calocedrus macrolepis Kurz IN SON LA

Authors

Abstract

Hyptis suaveolens L. Poit and Calocedrus macrolepis Kurz are two plant species distributed in Vietnam that contain numerous bioactive compounds with potential applications in medicine and the fragrance industry. In this study, essential oils of both species were collected in Son La Province, Vietnam, and extracted using diethyl ether. The yields of the essential oils were 0.87% (density 0.76) for H. suaveolens and 3.04% (density 0.91) for C. macrolepis. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed that the major constituents of H. suaveolens oil were Methyl linolenate (29.90%), Palustrinol (19.12%), Dehydroabietinol (18.77%), Phytol (15.11%), Metholene (10.80%), Methyl linoleate (3.80%), and Abieta-7,13-diene (2.51%). The essential oil of C. macrolepis consisted predominantly of Ferruginol (100%). Both essential oils exhibited antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, indicating their potential applications in the treatment of gastrointestinal and skin diseases.
