Abstract

Alfed North Whitehead (1861 - 1947) was one of the prominent philosophers and educators of the twentieth century. Whitehead’s philosophy of education embodies his aspiration to create a progressive education based on the promotion of feedom, interest, and initiative in education, with the unity of the spirit of liberalism and usefulness. The basic views in Whitehead’s philosophy of education so far are still valid, consistent with the
context of the 21st century, which is oriented to the cause of educational innovation in many countries, in which there is Vietnam. In this article, the author focuses on Whitehead’s ideas about progressive education, with the following basic contents: 1) Whitehead’s criticism of traditional education; 2) requirements for progressive education; 3) Whitehead’s influence on education in the United Kingdom, the United States and some suggestive points for Vietnam.
