Knowledge and practice of the prevention of acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis in hospitalized patients at 108 Military central Hospital from 2022 to 2023

Abstract

Objective: To assess the knowledge and practices for the prevention of acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis among hospitalized patients at 108 Military Central Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using an ourselves-developed questionnaire to assess 122 inpatients diagnosed with acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis at 108 Military Central Hospital. Results: 61.5% of patients were aware of their bronchiectasis diagnosis, with 50% understanding that the condition is incurable. 86.1% of patients acknowledged the importance of preventive medication and medical guidance, while 95.9% of patients recognized the efficacy of preventive measures in reducing hospitalizations and complications. Rate of patients who had knowledge of prevention principles ranged from 65.6% to 89.3%. Common practiced preventive measures included chest percussion, postural drainage, treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, influenza and pneumococcal vaccination, and avoiding environmental pollutants. Conclusion: The knowledge and adherence to preventive practices among inpatients at 108 Military Central Hospital regarding acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis were relatively satisfactory. However, certain essential methods are still overlooked, indicating the necessity for enhanced education and reinforcement of treatment compliance among patients
