A survey on the knowledge of stroke among adults in Cam Luong commune, Cam Thuy district, Thanh Hoa province

Abstract

Objectives: To survey the level of stroke knowledge including definition, stroke symptoms, stroke risk factors, FAST warning signs and stroke first-aid among adults in Cam Luong Commune, Cam Thuy District, Thanh Hoa Province. Methodology: The study was conducted on 97 adults in the volunteer medical examination program of Hanoi Medical University- Thanh Hoa Campus in Cam Luong commune, Cam Thuy district, Thanh Hoa province from August 2023 to October 2023, using questionnaires. Results: In 97 adults, the percentage of participants who had knowledge about the definition of stroke was 63.92%, about stroke risk factors was 72.16% and 82.47% recognized stroke symptoms. Awareness of FAST warning signs reached 52.58%, with the majority having learned through television, radio, or newspapers (32.99%). The rate of participants who selected the correct first aid of stroke was limited, incorrect handling methods were also commonly chosen. Conclusion: Participants already have knowledge about stroke. However, their initial treatment of stroke is still influenced by word-of-mouth experiences, leading to incorrect treatments and delaying the golden time for emergency care. It is necessary to implement more program to provide knowledge of stroke to community
