Foot self-care knowledge and practice of out-patients with diabetes mellitus at Thanh Nhan Hospital in 2021

Abstract

Objectives: To describe the levels of foot self-care knowledge and practice of out-patients with diabetes mellitus at Thanh Nhan hospital in 2021, To determine related factors affect the levels of foot self-care knowledge and practice of out-patients with diabetes mellitus at Thanh Nhan hospital in 2021.

Methods and subjects: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted of 153 out-patients at the Out-patients Clinic at Thanh Nhan hospital from August 2021 to October 2021.

Results: The study indicated that the average score of foot self-care knowledge was 15.4 ± 3.83. The patients had a low level of foot self-care knowledge accounting for 15.0%, a medium level was 16.3% and a good level was 68.6%. The average score of patients’ foot self-care practice was 72.7 ± 12.2 with patients’ foot self-care practice were rated as poor (6.5%), medium 79.1%, and good 14.4%. The correlation analysis showed that knowledge and time of disease detection are correlated with foot self-care practice with corresponding values r = 0.45 (p< 0.001) and r = -0.23 (p < 0.01).

Conclusion: The study shows that the majority of patients have good foot self-care knowledge, however, the majority of patients’ practice of food self-care is only at medium level. This mean, nurses can provide health education program based on relevant factors to improve the foot self-care capacity of people with diabetes mellitus
