PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERIENCE OF NURSING/MIDWIFERY DIRECTLY CARING FOR PREGNANT WOMEN WITH COVID-19 AT HANOIMATERNITY HOSPITAL BASE 2 IN 2022

Abstract

Objectives: Describe the psychological experiences of nurses and midwives in the process of directly caring for pregnant women with COVID-19 at HanoiObstetrics & GynecologyHospital. Methods:Phenomenological qualitative research was conducted by interviewing 15 health workers who are nurses and midwives from 4 groups participating in COVID-19 care and treatment at facility 2- Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from March to May 2022. The research toolkit, developed on the basis of Roy’s adaptive theory, consists of 3 open-ended questions; 5 semi-structured questions. Data was analyzed by inductive method on the basis of Colaizzi’s seven stages. Results: The experiences of nurses and midwives caring for pregnant women with COVID-19 were explored with four challenging experiences including: psychological/mental experiences, challenges of working in a COVID-19 facility, career challenges, Experiencing change and improving pandemic response. By the current classification, there appeared to be an interweaving of negative and positive effects with psychological, social, and occupational activities.Conclusion: Nurses and midwives caring for pregnant women with COID-19 experienced emotional and psychological stress as well as work challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, comprehensive support to protect the physical and mental health of health workers is a priority during the COVID-19 crisis
