Abstract

Objective: To describe the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among nurses at Gia Lam District General Hospital in 2024. Research method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 149 nurses working at Gia Lam District General Hospital, using the standardized Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) to assess symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders. Results: The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among nurses in the past 12 months was 83.9%, with the most common affected areas being the lower back (63.5%), back (58.4%), neck, shoulders, and knees (around 50%). The least affected area was the elbows (29.5%). The rate of nurses experiencing movement limitations in at least one area in the past 12 months was 83.9%, with 43% having consulted a therapist at least once. The departments with the highest rates of musculoskeletal disorders included Intensive Care (92.9%), Combined Specialties, Pediatrics, and Functional Units (100%). Conclusion: Musculoskeletal disorders are a common issue among nurses at Gia Lam District General Hospital, with the highest prevalence in the lower back (63.5%) and back (58.4%). Some departments, such as Intensive Care and Combined Specialties, reported extremely high rates of MSDs (92.9%-100%). This condition has significantly impacted the mobility of 83.9% of the staff, with 43% seeking therapy. The hospital should implement screening, early diagnosis, and rehabilitation programs for its staff to mitigate the negative effects of musculoskeletal disorders
