Knowledge and practice of dengue fever prevention of regular nursing students of Nam Dinh University of Nursing in 2023

Abstract

Objective: To describe the knowledge and practice of dengue fever prevention of full-time Nursing students at Nam Dinh University of Nursing in 2023. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 440 full-time of Nam Dinh University of Nursing students who had completed the microbiology and parasitology course. Students were assessed on their knowledge and practice of preventing dengue fever through a pre-designed self-administered questionnaire, concerning to some documents and expert opinions. Results: The majority of students knew about dengue fever prevention (90.5%). The knowledge with the highest rate of correct answers was the transmission method with 98.0%. The knowledge with the lowest rate of correct answers was the time it takes for mosquitoes to bite people (17.6%). The percentage of students who practiced dengue fever prevention was 75.0%. The method with the highest rate of correct answers was vector control (84.5%), and the lowest rate was mosquito control by wearing long clothes with 45.7%. Conclusion: In general, students have good knowledge and practice in preventing dengue fever. However, a gap exists between the percentage of students possessing correct knowledge and those demonstrating satisfactory practical skills. This highlights the necessity for students to engage in hands-on practice via early internships, following their theoretical studies, to reinforce and solidify their learned knowledge
