Abstract

Objective: To describe the current level of knowledge and attitudes toward surgical site infection (SSI) prevention among nurses and midwives, and to identify factors associated with their SSI knowledge. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between July and August 2024 among 87 nurses and midwives at Hung Vuong General Hospital. Data were collected via a standardized self-administered questionnaire developed according to Ministry of Health guidelines, which was reviewed by five experts (Content Validity Index = 98%) and demonstrated a reliability coefficient of 0.89. Results: Participants had a mean age of 29.4 ± 5.0 years; 69% were female, and the majority (1–5 years) of clinical experience. The proportion of respondents demonstrating satisfactory SSI prevention knowledge exceeded 90%, and 100% exhibited positive attitudes toward monitoring and preventing SSI. The only factor significantly associated with knowledge was place of training (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The high levels of SSI-related knowledge and attitudes among nurses and midwives at Hung Vuong General Hospital underscore effective baseline awareness, yet targeted training interventions-particularly tailored by training background-are recommended to sustain and further improve SSI prevention practices
