SOME GROSS LESIONS AND MICROSCOPIC LESIONS OF PIGS WITH PORCINE EPIDEMIC DIARRHEA (PED) IN THANH HOA PROVINCE
Abstract
The goal of this study was to identify gross and microscopic lesions in pigs with
porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). Dissecting 25 pigs under 2 weeks old raised at farms in
Thanh Hoa with PED by the standard method of examination in TCVN 8402: 2010, showed
that: The main gross lesions and microscopic lesions in pigs infected with PED were: thin
corpses; swollen small intestine with thin wall and lumpy yellowish substance; swollen
stomach containing undigested milk; congestive and hemorrhagic mesenteric ganglion;
clay-colored degenerative liver, pulmonary congestion; slight swelling of the kidneys;
swollen heart, soft muscle with the ratios of 100; 100; 88; 80; 52; 48; 40; and 24%,
respectively. Using paraffin transfer technique to determine microscopic lesions, the results
of microscopic lesions in the intestines are mainly: degeneration of small intestinal
epithelial cells, necrosis, oblong, short villi. In contrast, proliferation of intestinal lymphoid
follicles, inflammatory cell infiltration in the intestinal submucosa.
