Study on evaluating biological properties of Ibuprofen gel

Abstract

Ibuprofen is a typical Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain, inflammation, and fever. However, long-term oral use of ibuprofen for chronic diseases such as arthritis can cause serious side effects, including stomach ulcers. Therefore, a topical gel formula containing 5% ibuprofen, ethanol, propylene glycol, and poloxamer 407 has been researched and developed to solve the above problem. This article presents the results of the previously mentioned ibuprofen gel evaluation. As a result, according to ISO 10993:2009 (ISO, 2015) criteria, the given ibuprofen gel is not likely to be hazardous to L-929 mouse fibroblasts and hF human fibroblasts. Furthermore, ibuprofen gel can distribute uniformly, release active substances from the Gel scaffold at a rate of more than 90% in 05 hours, and penetrate the skin of white mice. This study approach may be expanded with various research topics, such as assessing the capacity of active substances to permeate human skin, examining the amount of irritation, and assessing stability.
