Improving self-study in Kanji learning for Japanese major students at Ho Chi Minh City Open University

Abstract
Kanji in Japanese is a complex writing system formed with a variety of strokes and readings; it becomes a big challenge for learners. The research focuses on the situation of learning and teaching Kanji at the Japanese Language Department, Ho Chi Minh City Open University. Through the steps of conducting a survey and the results of statistical analysis, the peculiar phenomenon of Kanji was analyzed, and conclusions on students’ difficulties in learning Kanji were drawn. Hence, by improving self-regulated learning and proposing advanced teaching methods, students could overcome difficulties and increase their learning activeness.
