Study on current situation and solutions to reduce plastic waste at Quy Nhon University

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the current status and propose solutions to reduce plastic waste at Quy Nhon University (QNU). The types of plastic and plastic wastes were surveyed and audited from the end of December 2023 to April 2024. The total of 60 trash bins (240 L) were examined at the end of the day at 15 buildings, Lecture Hall A1, Lecture Hall A8, Student Canteen, and Dormitory C3. Moreover, 382 online questionnaires were used to survey subjects such as students, lecturers and staff in QNU. The results showed that plastic waste weight accounts for 18% ÷ 31% of the total weight of solid wastes in QNU. In seven types of plastics waste under examination, plastic bottles (PET plastic) accounts for 31% ÷ 34%; plastic bags (HDPE plastic) 19% ÷ 23% and other types of plastic waste. Through the surveyed questionnaire, 100% of subjects said that plastic products were very cheap, convenient and ready to be disposed to the environment; 85% ÷ 95% of subjects were aware of the impact of plastic waste on the environment and human health. Currently, all plastic wastes generated (except for plastic bottles) at QNU were transferred to external units for treatment at the landfill. Therefore, it is very necessary to build and implement solutions to reduce plastic wastes at the source.
