From scholar education to liberal education

Abstract

Liberal education is a term that is being used so widely that it has become globalized. Few people are aware that liberal ideas came into being and existed for nearly half a millennium in the constant struggle with scholastic education. The need to liberate from dogmatic patterns, expand knowledge and stimulate individual discovery and creativity became the driving force of a new education. Since the Renaissance and Enlightenment, scholar education, despite limit within the doors of the church, has spread outside and persisted in the habits of many educators. It is a fact that in educational systems that have not completely abandoned the totalitarian nature of scholastic education, the construction of programs and the application of new, modern teaching methods are just mechanical formalities. Vietnamese education is approaching European and American liberal education, so it is essential to grasp information from the roots of Western ideological revolutions to free itself from traditional habits and dogmatic patterns.
