Abstract

After the French colonialistsfundamentally completed the military pacification inVietnam, they began to exploit the colony.Vietnamese villages played an important role insocial life as long-standing autonomous and selfcontained entities. Therefore, the colonial administrationimplemented the "Administrative Reform” policy withthe ambition to intervene and control the internalaffairs of the villages. The administrative reformunderwent three phases, starting in 1921 and endingin 1945 in most localities in Tonkin, including CamKhe district, Phu Tho province. The Frenchcolonialists forced the villages to change theirmanagement apparatus according to the decrees andgeneral pattern of the village conventions theyissued. However, each village had its customs andpractices. Hence, this article will focus onintroducing the village management apparatus,clarifying three customs in the village conventions:marriage, honour celebration, and funeral, throughthe reformed village conventions.
