The image of a fisherman and woodcutter in Chinese and Vietnamese ancient literature

Abstract
The images of a fisherman and woodcutter were popular art subjects in Chinese ancient literature, symbolling mind and morality. These figures also became symbols of the reclusive and natural harmony life that officials often sought after retirement. The characters of fisherman and woodcutter wandering along rivers while making dialogues were typical in Chinese ancient poetry, which also had an important impact on Vietnamese ancient literature in general. This study aims at explaining the claim. Descriptive- qualitative and quantitative methods were used to fulfil the research object. The focuses of the study are the history, origin, and sensitive appearances of the fisherman and woodcutter art characters in poetry. Consequently, the Chinese and Vietnamese literature – related images are more deeply learned. This also helps to stimulate more understanding of Chinese music and paintings
