Abstract
In 1802, after defeating the Tây Sơndynasty, the Nguyễn dynasty was established. Sinceascending to the throne, Emperor Gia Longimplemented and built a centralized monarchy basedon a specialized bureaucratic system, and carried outpolicies towards officials in the border regions, particularly granting “hereditary positions” topeople of ethnic minorities. However, during thereign of Emperor Minh Mạng, the Nguyễngovernment implemented the “land reclamation andassimilation” policy, gradually abolishing thehereditary system for officials of ethnic minorities, and standardizing ranks, positions, salaries, anduniforms for officials of ethnic minorities. Thesepolicies demonstrated the central government'spower and contributed to strengthening control overlocal authorities, stabilizing the political and socialsituation, developing the economy, and safeguardingnational sovereignty and territorial integrity.
