Research on wave attenuation in mangrove forest

Abstract

     In recent decades, the important role of mangroves in the attenuation of waves and mitigating storm damages in the coastal area has attracted the attention of many scientists, managers and coastal stake holders. Dissipation of wave energy in mangrove forests is considered as a soft measure to protect coastline and beaches. This paper presents research results of wave energy dissipation mechanism in mangrove forest (Kandelia obovate and Sonneratia caseolaris) in Hai Phong province by using mathematical model Swan 2D in order to clarify the effects of hydraulic factors and mangrove's characteristics on attenuating the wave energy in the study area.
