Abstract

Mangroves is an integral part of the coastal ecosystem in Vietnam. Dai Hop is a coastal commune in Kien Thuy District, Hai Phong City which has implemented mangrove reforestation since 1998. To date, there is nearly 1000 hectares of mature forest which has brought significant values to local society and many communities in the region. To assess the functions and services of mangroves in the study area, the authors have used the combination approach of qualitative assessment (interview key person, group discussions, field visits ) and quantitative assessment methods (household interview and evaluation of quantitative data) in combined with the impact analysis, the assessment is not based on the actual value, but also based on assumptions set (without the impact of afforestation, the result was recorded or not). The results showed that mangroves have three advantages: First, mangroves have the ability to protect seadyke, the coastal commune and assets which are located outside the dike, such as boats and shirmp fonds. Secondly, mangroves bring direct economic benefits, especially for poor households in the commune who often live on the mangroves. Third, we can say about the ecosystem service benefits through the mangroves' function like carbon sink of mangrove forests.
