Emergency spillway – a solution for safety of hydraulic and hydropower reservoir

Abstract

    One important structure in controlling discharge and stage for different water demands and for disaster mitigation is reservoir. Safety of reservoir is now playing a very important role due to global climate change toward disadvantage trend. Thus, a solution for reservoir safety has started in Vietnam by constructing emergency spillways. 

    Results of the study on the emergency spillway is not only used when flood is higher than the designed flood but also is used to raise the normal water level (but still keeping the dam height), as well as to build spillways simultaneously with different types and different functions aimed at reducing construction costs.
