Abstract

The region of southern central Vietnam (from Phu Yen to Binh Thuan province) is considered as the driest region of the country where the annual rainfall of some parts is only about 700 mm (Phan Rang city), and this region has high potential risk of drought and sandy desert. The discharges in rivers of region during dry season are very low with long duration, even to 7 or 8 months. Recent years, with the Elnino phenomena and climate changes then the water resources of the region are more difficult for uses in irrigation and domestic demands. In this study, the potention and changes of water resources in the dry season are studied and assessed, some issues concerning effects of drought and sandy desert are also considered. Some long term measures for drought and sandy desert mitigation are proposed for the study region.
