Study effects of dam breaking at Ke Go reservoir - Ha Tinh in downstream area
Abstract
The reservoir is constructed for a lot of socio-economic purposes such as: irrigration, hydroelectricity, flood protection, eco-tourism etc. However, there is a risk of dam breaking in reservoirs whose hight water level at different locations of the river downstream of the dam, threatening life and properties of people living in downstream area. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a reasearch on effects of dam breaking. The article uses the model MIKE FLOOD illustrating the case of dam breaking at Ke Go reservoir causing flood in downstream area at the probable of maximum flood (PMF). Ke Go Lake is one of the biggest reservoirs in the Middle of Vietnam. Its lowerlands is condensed of people and a developed economic area. The research assesses the depth and velocity of flood water, affected area and appearing period of flood in downstream. This is important information for the risk management and emergency action plan to have suitable measurements to reduce damages of dam breaking..
