Assessment of investment efficiency and electricity consumption of low head pump installed in Hung Yen province

Abstract

    Low pressure pumps (also known as "pump without discharge pipe") which are vertical axial flow pumps with low total head and design head less than 3.0m were installed and tested at 15 locations in Hung Yen province. Three stations were selected and their investment cost, electrical consumption, noise and station design were compared with other pumps including vertical axial flow, horizontal mixed flow pump and submerged pump. The results show that the low pressure pump has advantages over other traditional pumps as listed here: (1) the investment cost including construction cost and equipment cost is lowest; (2) total electriclity consumption per year of the low head pump is 37 - 60% lower than that of other pump types; (3) the pump runs quietly; and (4) the design of pump station is simple.
